As 2019 comes to an end, I want to mention some of the locally owned businesses that closed their doors for the last time in 2019. If I leave out one of your favorites, please let me know and I’ll add to the post.

Sometimes the last day of business is a celebration and sometimes it feels more like a wake. Sadly, many of these business’s last days were wakes.

Our House, Koshary, Taste of Thai, The Table on Elm, The Peoples Perk, Daisy’s Designer Alley, and Glitters.

We send a fond farewell to these very unique places and reminisce about the times that we spent there, chatting with the owners and enjoying the atmosphere. Each one of them was totally unique and would be hard to re-create, in that they usually reflected the vision of one person…and often they were that person’s dream.

What I wish people knew is that a few months of poor sales can sink an independent business. Most mom and pop shops don’t have deep financial resources.

How many times have you heard, “But I loved that place!!”? Well, if you love a place, be an unabashed regular customer there. Don’t just buy a cup of coffee. Buy more and take it home for later! And do try to do ALL of your gift purchasing at independent shops and farmers markets. I’m telling ya… the need is great!
