Someday, Weezie Black Keiner’s vision may take her in-home cookie baking business to a place besides her tidy kitchen in a quiet neighborhood in Greensboro, NC.

But for now, “The cookies are taking over my whole house!” Weezie laughs as she explains why cookie cutters, big boxes of sugar and flour, half-finished cookies, and photography equipment are neatly taking up space in her kitchen and dining room.

“It all started last Valentine’s Day,” explains Weezie, who had worked for eight years as a special education teacher and part-time photographer. “I baked some chocolate chip cookies for friends, and the cookies were such a hit that I started to accept small orders for birthday parties. Honestly, I was trying to find something different to do because I now have two small children, Christopher and Ellie, and needed more flexibility.“

Over the next few months the demand for Weezie’s unique cookie designs got so strong that it became obvious that she should get serious about the business side of things. Weezie had her kitchen certified by the State of NC and obtained an LLC designation for her business, which she named “Weezie Like Sunday Morning.” Her cookies started popping up at birthday parties, graduations, gender reveals, and museum fundraisers.

Now, one year in, Weezie is quick to explain that the support of family and friends has been essential to her success. She credits her husband Chris with being her first investor and always having her back when little problems arise. And there are other key supporters.

“My dad is encouraging me to open a shop on State Street, and my bookkeeper friend would like to see me have a Square account to help with payments and record keeping. And the friends I’ve met online who are making cookies in other cities have shared some of their experiences with me and have helped me imagine the possibilities for growing my business,” explains Weezie.

And although she has big plans for the future of her cookie business, she calmly adds that she doesn’t feel the need to rush. Perhaps it is this careful, thoughtful, “like Sunday morning” attitude that will be the extra ingredient that makes all the difference.

Weezie Like Sunday Morning, the in-home cookie baking business, may look easy, but that’s because Weezie doesn’t let the hard work and stress of owning a small business take center stage. And it is very easy to become a fan of this talented young woman with a big heart and a growing dream.
